Category: News

Rev. Joseph Sun (1948-2014) was born to a Christian family in Hong Kong.  Upon completing high school, he responded to God's calling to engage in pastoral ministry and attended China Bible Seminary and Alliance Bible Seminary where he obtained his Bachelors and Masters degrees respectively.

Upon graduation from his undergraduate education, Rev. Sun served as a church planter for the Swatow Christian Church and planted the Tsz Wan Shan Swatow Christian Church. Subsequently, he was called by the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church Union of Hong Kong (the Union) to engage in a church plant in the Oi Man Estate where he established the Oi Man Alliance Church.  During his decade long tenure at the Union, Rev. Sun also served on the board of directors where he took on various notable leadership roles.

In 1987,  Rev. Sun felt the calling from God to engage in overseas ministries and uprooted his family from Hong Kong to Prince Rupert Canada.  A few years later, he was invited by the British Columbia Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches to plant and pastor the Vancouver Chinese MB Church.  In 1996, Rev. Sun transferred to the Winnipeg Chinese MB Church to meet local ministry needs.

In 1999, Rev. Sun moved to Calgary where he faithfully served at the Calgary Chinese Alliance Church, Calgary Chinese Christian Church, Hosanna Chinese Lutheran Church and Mountainview Grace Church respectively.  Despite his hectic ministry schedule, Rev. Sun made great efforts to care for his family; he insisted on family worship as a vehicle for him and his family to bond with God.

In 2012, Rev. Sun retired from full-time ministry due to various health reason.  However, he had not forgotten God's calling from his days as a teenager and continued to serve in various evangelical capacities until his last days on earth.

On December 9, 2014, Rev. Sun rested peacefully in the loving arms of our Great Shepherd.
